The Scoop - June 7, 2021
The Lima Rotary Club welcomed Congressman Jim Jordan as our guest speaker.
"Washington's a mess," according to Congressman Jim Jordan. "The number one concern I hear from business owners is they can't find people to work. It shouldn't surprise us, when we pay people not to work, we can't find workers." Jordan says his other concerns are inflation, foreign policy, and what's happening to our liberties. "Every single liberty we enjoy as Americans under the First Amendment has been assaulted over the past several months. You've got five rights under the First Amendment: Your right to practice your faith the way you want, your right to assemble, your right to petition your government, freedom of the press, freedom of speech. Every single one's been attacked. This is the world we live in today and it really concerns me so I try to speak out." Jordan says he is working to see if there are things the Republicans and Democrats can come together to work on.
Also at Monday's meeting, we welcomed new members Andi Ostendorf and Andrew Lotz. Demi Burden, Jeff Dulmage and Tim Sielschott became Paul Harris Fellows. And Dick Schroeder announced that the Lima Rotary Club exceeded its PolioPlus and Every Rotarian Every Year goals for the year. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Golf Outing
Register now for the Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing on July 21 and support our scholarship fund!
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the annual Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing. It will be held on Wednesday, July 21st at Hidden Creek Golf Course with a rain date of Wednesday, August 25th. The Golf Committee is working closely with Hidden Creek Golf Course to again ensure our participants' safety against COVID.
Last year we had 27 teams competing and raised over $40,000, all of which went to benefit the Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund. The Rotary Memorial Scholarship Fund selects persons who live or work in Allen County who are in pursuit of a degree or certification and will attend a school or college in Allen County. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage Allen County employees and residents to work and plan for their futures within our county. As of March 2021, over 1,089 adults wishing to continue their education have received scholarships from the Lima Rotary Club. These scholarships total over $817,250. Degrees or certifications can be achieved at the Apollo Career Center (Adult Education), Bluffton University, Rhodes State College, The Ohio State University at Lima and the University of Northwestern Ohio. All residents who live in and employees who work in Allen County are eligible.
The golf outing is open to the public so please invite your friends to join us. Contact Andy Wannemacher today to register or click here to register online.

Board Reports
Golf Outing Update                Andy Wannemacher
Wannemacher stated we currently have 28 teams and 38 hole sponsors signed up to participate in the Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing scheduled for July 21st.
Polio Plus Update                    Derek Stemen
Stemen stated Rotary garments were distributed at the June 7th Club Meeting and will distributed again at the June 14th Club Meeting.  With the proceeds from the Garment Sale, the Polio Plus goal for 2020 – 2021 was reached.
President Elect Report        Jeff Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald reported plans for his year upcoming year are underway.   The Reverse Raffle fund raiser that was just held was a great success.  The Fall & Spring Blood Clinic will be returning with the Fall Clinic scheduled for the first Saturday of November 2021.   The Christmas Auction will be back in December.    Committee Chairman Russ Decker and the Program Committee are already filing in the schedule for 2021 – 2022.  July, August and September 2021 are nearly filled.  He thanked John for all he did for the Club this past year. Fitzgerald’s goal is that effective July 1, 2020, we begin a normal year!
Treasurer’s Report          Dan Best
Best reviewed the Balance Sheet Previous Year Comparison
The Cash position is currently up by $26,500 but after payments are made, the Net Cash Position is $9,000.  Accounts Receivable are listed at $76,0007 with $63,200 as amphitheater pledges.  Actual Accounts Receivable are $12,807 which is down by $13,000 from last year.  The Equity position of $21, 539 is up by $19,691 which is due to the cost savings from expense reductions.

He also reviewed the Profit & Loss Previous Year Comparison
Overall Total Income for the Club is down by $14,300 from last year.  Members’ Dues are down $8,500 as dues reductions and expense savings were passed along to the members. With year-to-date expenses down, net income year to-date increased by $13,000 compared to last year.  This has potential for the next year but it could be an issue for the following year.  Best stated it will be Nip and Tuck as expenses will go up quickly.  Increasing dues may need to be considered.  Best is also looking into the possibility of the Club applying for a non-profit designation so a fund raiser could be held.

Wannemacher made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report as stated.  Stemen seconded the motion.  Board approved.

Our DEI webinar series
Our six-part webinar series that explores diversity, equity, and inclusion has attracted more than 3,000 attendees so far from all over the world. You can find links below to five of the recordings, along with comments from participants:
  • Design an Inclusive Plan for Your Organization. “Equity is a choice because it’s about systems and processes. In Rotary, we need to make sure our systems offer fair treatment and equal opportunity.”
  • The Power of Connection with Diverse Communities. “Excellent topic, which is complex and requires understanding. Brilliant and knowledgeable speakers. I learnt a lot.”
  • Exploring the Black Experience in Rotary. “Having the discussion about inclusion and racial issues [is] long overdue. So to combat inequalities, you have to make individuals feel uncomfortable to get the ball moving.”
  • Building Strong Intergenerational Relationships. “We are sometimes not aware of our bias until someone else points it out or you are exposed to others’ experiences. I know intergenerational bias is one that flies under the radar too often.”
  • Building a Welcoming Community for People with Disabilities. “I learned that I know very little, and that I need to ask and question what we do. As president of my club, I will make watching this video a personal request of our members so we can start a meaningful discussion and planning on how to be inclusive of the disabled community in our club, because we are not right now.”
The final webinar in this series, Planning for an Inclusive Future, will take place in July. More details are coming soon!
