There was a huge increase in the number of people adopting puppies during the pandemic.
Doodles topped the list, according to Dr. Adam Ferguson from Baker Animal Hospital. He told us that doodles are a mix of a poodle with another breed, such as a golden doodle, which is a golden retriever/poodle and labradoodle which is a Labrador retriever/poodle. "When I was a kid, we called these mixed breed mutts and you couldn't give them away. Now they're called designer dogs dogs and we pay a fortune for them." Dr. Ferguson says puppies were expensive during the pandemic. Among his clients, the average price of a puppy in the past year was $2,500. The most expensive dog he saw was a pocket pit (pit bull mixed with a smaller dog) which sold for $6,500.
Dr. Ferguson says basic healthcare for a puppy includes a full course of vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention, dewormer, and spaying or neutering at the appropriate age. He says before you get a puppy, you should make sure you are ready for a lifetime commitment and can keep up with not just the feeding and basic care, but the veterinary care and disease prevention which will ensure a long, happy life for your puppy.

Intercountry committees date back to the early 1930s when Rotary members from Germany and France organized a petit comité to further mutual understanding between Rotarians of those two countries. The idea caught on and nearly 30 committees were created in Europe by 1937 when war prevented them from functioning.
The France-Germany intercountry committee reformed in 1950, followed by many others. Since then, intercountry committees continue to foster international understanding, improve relationships between regions that have historically been affected by conflict, and bridge cultural, language, and geographic differences. Intercountry committees offer the opportunity for fellowship and service between clubs and districts in two countries.
Today there are an estimated 400 ICCs throughout the Rotary world. ICCs helps clubs form twin club relationships for long-term cooperation with international counterparts, help districts find partners for programs like Rotary Friendships Exchanges, and lead to innovative, impactful service projects like the one started by the Poland-Ukraine ICC. Contact your district international service chair or district governor to learn about your country’s involvement in ICCs.
Peace is fundamental to Rotary’s mission. In a time of heightened tensions and uncertainties due to COVID-19 and other factors, it is critically important that we work together to create environments where peace can thrive. Our members are addressing the underlying causes of conflict every day through service projects and peace fellowships and scholarships.

An intercountry committee (ICC) brings together two or more districts or countries to improve intercultural understanding, establish networks across borders, and strengthen ties between members, clubs, and districts in different countries. The more than 400 intercountry committees are a key resource for expanding Rotary networks while fostering cooperation and peace. Help promote understanding and peace by working with an ICC to:

Avenues of service
Get global grant advice
Not all clubs have experience with global grants. Members of the Rotary Club of East Lansing, Michigan, USA, in District 6360, felt overwhelmed by what they perceived as a complicated process. With the help of Karen Parkhurst, a member of the District 7120 (New York, USA) resource network, the East Lansing club developed its first global grant. Thinking creatively to find support helped the club launch an international service project.
Rotary Fellowships are a fun way to make new friends, get more out of Rotary membership, and find service opportunities. With nearly 100 global fellowships, there’s something for everyone. Check out our two newest groups — the Rotary Fellowships of Camping and Entrepreneurs — and connect with a fellowship to get involved.
Upcoming presidential conferences
The Rotary presidential conference series highlights the humanitarian work that Rotary clubs and districts do locally and globally. Each conference will also explore how our areas of focus intersect.
Rotarians and Rotaractors can participate in a variety of programs that give members even more ways to connect with others and make an impact. In March, Rotary will send a survey about our programs and other offerings to a sampling of our members. We want to hear about what you like and how you think our programs can be improved. If you receive a link to the survey, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts with us.

Ethical dilemma
Your club has been meeting at a restaurant for 35 years. Your meeting contract extends for another five years, and your members like the venue and say the location is convenient. You recently learned that several restaurant staff members resigned and that the management is being investigated for serious discrimination allegations. What would you do?
Your club officers will benefit from the leadership and team-building skills they’ll learn during their upcoming district training assembly. They’ll also hear about new district initiatives and how districts can support club innovations. Find exercises in the District Training Assembly Leader’s Guide to help your teams work together to define new goals and strategies for their year in office.
We recommend that club officers and committee chairs complete the courses for their roles before attending district training assembly sessions. Role-specific learning plans are available in the club leadership catalog.

Training Tip
Link directly to Learning Center courses and learning plans
As a trainer, you recommend courses to officers and members, but you may not be sure which link to provide for a learning plan. Deep links that go directly to courses can be found in the course catalog. You can also find deep links to a set of courses that are part of a learning plan by downloading and using this Excel file. We recommend that you use these links on your club and district websites, in your email messages, and when promoting courses on social media.
Note: If you share this email with your members that have not been to the Learning Center before, they will need to go to rotary.org/learn, sign into My Rotary, and accept the privacy policy before you click the link to a specific course or learning plan. On mobile devices, links to the Learning Center may not work. Instead, go to the Learning Center through My Rotary, then search for materials or courses.
