The Scoop - April 4, 2022
Autism affects 1 in 44 people.
Angie Toland, the Occupational Therapy Assistant and Transition Coordinator for the Hancock Educational Service Center and Tyler Burklund, Director of Special Education for the Hancock County Educational Service Center, told us that the prevalence of autism has increased 241% since 2000 and affects all socioeconomic backgrounds. Angie told us that autism is a neurological difference in brain wiring, not a disease. The people affected with autism often have difficulty with social interactions and think in black and white, paying keen attention to details. They also have hyper or under sensitivity of all senses (sound, sight, smell, touch, taste). The strengths of people with autism are that they memorize and learn quickly, are very honest, punctual and have a drive for perfection. Angie says there is no cure for autism but symptoms can be managed by early intervention.

District Conference
Register now for the District 6600 Conference May 13-15.
This year's District Conference is going to be spectacular!  I hope you will consider joining us in Geneva-on-the-Lake from Friday though Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. The deadline for hotel accommodations is fast approaching next week, on April 12, and we want everyone who wants to stay at the lodge or in a cottage have an opportunity to do so.

Click here to make a hotel or cottage reservation.  Be sure to use the codes 4GJ5M7 for Rooms or 4GJ8N7 for Cottages
Here are some of the highlights:
  • Four fantastic speakers are on tap including motivational Coach Roy Hall, Jr. (former OSU and NFL football player), Girls' Empowerment Activist Dr. Lisa Hinkleman, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Sandusky Bay Initiative Chief Scudder Mackey, and incoming Rotary International Director Beth Stubbs.

  • The Venue location is often referred to as Ohio's Wine Country. Saturday Afternoon Adventures include an opportunity to tour three local wineries, or see the magnificent covered bridges in the area, or ride a zip line over the valley.

  • Connect with new and experienced Rotarians over the district. Learn about district programs including Youth Exchange, STRIVE, MESA and many other club-level programs and grants that we've completed. Make new friends while keeping the old!
  • We believe FUN is paramount at a Rotary event. On Saturday night, a Murder Mystery is planned after dinner on Saturday.  Here's a sneak peek: Come to the quintessential whodunit thriller at the estate of Sir Warren Peace and get thrown into a night of mystery, intrigue and murder that you will never forget! With a killer crowd of people just waiting for murder to arrive on the scene, this night will keep everyone looking over their shoulders and guessing who the next victim will be!
  • Golfing on Friday! Gather a foursome and meet us on the links at 11:45. Lunch and golf cart included for just $75. This requires a separate registration on DACdb or with golf outing chair, Pam Brumbaugh. Pam's email address is pbrumbaugh@brumbaughelderlaw.com
All meals, programs and the hospitality suites Friday and Saturday night are included in the registration fee of $195 for a single, or $365 for a couple. (The wineries tour and covered bridges tour are an additional $45 per person.)    Register NOW for District 6600 Conference 2022.

Plus one lucky person's name will be drawn to win the 2002 Mustang Mach-E being raffled! If you haven't yet purchased your tickets, click here.  The best value is 3 tickets for $200!

I look forward to seeing you in Geneva next month!

Yours in Rotary,

Mary L. AufdenKampe
