The Scoop - March 21, 2022
Marion is home to the Harding Presidential Sites.
Warren G. Harding was the 29th President of the United States. From Marion, Ohio, he was a newspaperman who owned the Marion Daily Star. In 1920 he campaigned for president from his front porch, attracting 600,000 people over three months. Harding's time in office was short - he died of a heart attack in August 1923. Since 1926, his Marion home has been open to the public for tours and in 1927 a memorial was completed where he and his wife are buried. In 2021 the Harding Presidential Library was dedicated. Site Manager Sherry Hall gave us a fascinating overview of the project including a 2 year, $1.3 million restoration of the Harding Home that was painstakingly returned to its 1920 appearance. Hall told us the presidential library features exhibit galleries, event space, historic displays and a gift shop. A second phase of the library is still to be constructed. The library and home are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with guided tours offered on the hour beginning at 10 a.m. On Sundays, the site is open 12-5 p.m., with tours beginning at 1 p.m. The memorial is a mile and a half away from the library and home and is available to visitors from dawn to dusk.
Also on Monday, we presented our quarterly scholarships to 15 non-traditional students who are attending schools in Allen County. To date, we have awarded 1,126 scholarships for a total of $852,750.

Interact
The Bath High School Interact Club has been busy as usual with several community service projects and volunteer opportunities for our members.
In addition to meeting every other Friday during the school day for about 30 minutes, our members set a goal of conducting 24 hours of service each year.

Here is an overview of some of our most recent projects:

On February 21st (President’s Day) we used our day off school to visit the West Ohio Food Bank in the morning to help pack boxes for senior citizens. This is
one of our favorite events.

Also, later that same day we teamed up with the Allen East High School SADD Chapter to conduct a “Reality Party” where students enacted many things that can
go wrong at a non-chaperoned high school party.

On March 12th we hosted our “Father/Daughter” Dance at Bath Elementary school for students grades K-5. This is a huge project and took the help of lots of our club members.
This is our only fundraiser of the year and the money goes for college scholarships. We all went home tired after this long (but fun) day of service!

We still have some events coming up including the Bath HS Mock Crash, and Click It or Ticket seatbelt check. We also plan to support the students participating in the 4 Way Speech Contest.

We can’t wait to see everyone at our 2022 Pinning Ceremony on May 16th at the Lima Rotary Club meeting.

Ukraine
At the time of this correspondence, 2.5 million Ukrainian refugees are fleeing war and are in need of immediate assistance.
Recently, someone has come forward within our Rotary District and offered to match our donations up to $50,000 for the Disaster Response Fund. All contributions need to be made to the Rotary Disaster Response fund by April 30, 2022, so that these donations are prioritized for the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis. If we raise more than $50,000 between March 6 and April 30, I will suggest we make a contribution to ShelterBox

The generosity of District 6600 Rotarians has always exceeded expectations. I know our hearts are breaking for the people of Ukraine. I do not wish to put any stress on you personally, just do what you can, whatever you can, in service to others.  I am thankful for each of you.

To donate online at rotary.org - https://my.rotary.org/en/disaster-response-fund

Your club's President-Elect and Assistant Governor heard more about this Ukraine donation initiative at their training this past Saturday. Jim Murray, from the Huron Rotary Club, has volunteered to help us coordinate donations from club's foundations and answer questions regarding individual donations. Jim can be reached at 415-640-0027, or via email at jim.w.murray@gmail.com

Thank you,

Mary L. AufdenKampe
District Governor 2021-202
