Rotary District 6600 is helping with service projects in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
La Soufrière volcano erupted in the Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on April 9, 2021 causing widespread damage and destroying 80% of the agricultural land. Beth Schweitzer from the Tiffin Rotary Club told us that in February 2022, she was part of a team from Rotary District 6600 that traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to attend a project fair where three local Rotary clubs presented service projects to help the population. They included water access and water security, replacing a playground fence, sustainable farming, school disaster risk reduction, support of a home for girls, beach rehabilitation and more. The projects District 6600 chose to support for the 2021-2022 year are: a computer coding class for girls, security cameras for Lady of Guadalupe home for girls, and picnic tables for Fancy Beach. Projects that are being supported in the 2022-2023 year are: water for rural farms and water for Mayreau, school disaster response, Rotary South Children's Christmas Party, for Disadvantaged Children, childhood lifestyle, sustainable farming, and a smart playground including playground equipment at school for special needs children. The board of the Lima Rotary Club is considering how it would like to support these projects.
Also at Monday's meeting, we inducted three new members: Captain Charity Bender from the Salvation Army, Holly Metzger from Bluffton University and Chief Andy Heffner from the Lima Fire Department. Please make them welcome!
